The Soups

The Soups (full name The Highly-Flavoured East Indian Soups) started out in around 1989 when 16-year-old Saddleworth School best friends Chris Soup (keyboard & drum/ bass programming) and Rhys Soup (guitar and vocals) started writing and recording songs every Saturday night, at first with just a Casio SK-5 keyboard and a mic. Their lyrics were always daft, mainly involving private jokes, toilet humour, famous people and their beloved Oldham Athletic FC. Their love of New Order, Gary Numan and the Fall can clearly be heard in their bedroom pop.
They were later often joined by their schoolfriend, rock god Sparts (bass) and they recorded their Mull It Over album (a collection of most of their catchiest songs) as a trio around 1996-7, Although they never officially disbanded, Rhys’ permanent move to Japan appeared to mark the end of the Soups.
However, 25 years later in 2022, having played some Soups songs solo and with other musicians in Chiba, Rhys decided to reform the Soups with some of his favourite musicians:(Yuka on keyboards, JK on drums, Fumimasa on bass and Thomas on rhythm guitar.
The Soups are batty. Don’t take them seriously. If you don’t like them it’s probably your fault!
